On June 26, 1948 the Western powers – the USA, Great Britain and France – decided to respond to the Soviet blockade of Berlin by setting up an airlift. The Allied Museum is taking the 60th anniversary as an occasion to commemorate these events with a special exhibition.
The Museum would like to draw attention to the people behind the Airlift. Who were the men and women whose hard work and commitment contributed decisively to the Airlift’s success? The exhibition will show portraits and personal photos, many of them never published before. Biographical stations introduce the visitor to American, British, and German participants. They range from the American pilot who flew during the first days of the Airlift or a British soldier reporting on living conditions at the British airbase in Wunstorf to the German mechanic who serviced American C-54 aircraft at Fassberg Airfield.
Audio and video stations with eyewitness accounts round out the historical presentation of the theme. For a special end to the exhibition, visitors can stop by the Museum’s small auditorium and watch clips from the 1949 film The Bridge (Die Brücke), which was produced in conjunction with the Marshall Plan.
